Arapahoe House
The Start of my recovery
Who am I Pt-5 starts with a bus ride to Denver and treatment at Arapahoe House. A 21 day inpatient center. I was assigned a wonderful counselor who forced me to look at myself. Completing my 21 days. Given the chance to go to a halfway house called Wight Center which I accepted.
The Wight Center was a 70 day chance to get a few more days sober. One of the rules there was you have to be off the property from 7:00 AM to 5:00 PM and have a job. I paid for my time there and spent the time away riding buses learning the city of Denver. Assigned a new counselor and was not that happy with him. I best thing I was growing closer to my sister. She went to Glenwood for me and brought my things to me. All I had left one 30 gallon trash can full was The one really bad thing there. I started a sexual relationship in treatment. She was 20 years my junior, it ended badly. Referred to Sobriety House another halfway house
Sobriety House
Recovery
Sobriety House was the start of my real recovery. A 90 day halfway house. they had real groups plus I was assigned a great counselor. I found a job at a Village Inn close enough to walk if I had to. It was a fast 3 months for sure. Asked one time to cover a group and that was a great experience for me, my first group while still a client. Following completing the 90 days I rented a studio apartment.
Reuniting with my old girlfriend from The Wright House, that was a major mistake. Just wanting sex so I was happy to get back with her. I had quit my job at VI and was working full time at Sobriety House as there head cook. I loved the job. Then in early 1990 my girlfriend admitted to cheating on my with my sponsor and his girlfriend. Moving out of were we lived with a friend and traded our waterbed for her car.
After Sobriety House
Counselor
I had decided that I wanted to be a Counselor, so at my own expense. I started the classes needed to get my Level I counseling certificate. In April 1991 just after a year as head cook I walked in the Executive Directors office and offered my resignation effective May 15 1991 as I was going to work at Washington House as a Detox counselor. He accepted it and wrote a wonderful letter to the Director introducing me. Working for the first 6 months for free. However, Arapahoe House bought Washington House. Who An I pt-5 is about to make a left turn.
Odyssey
Halfway House
Who am I pt-5 ends with me leaving Washington House and being part owner of a halfway house named Odyssey with a former co-worker, and friend. Lasting only a few months I moved out and found another Job with a new company. I was 5 years into my career as a counselor and took a break for a year to do monitored sobriety tests. I then found a great job, with a company that I was to be with 10 years to the day.
