American Flag

History of the Flag

1777-1959

Did Betsy Ross Sew the first American Flag? The correct answer is unknown. There is ample evidence that she did sewed several American Flags, just no evidence that she did the first one. Congressman Francis Hopkinson seems most likely to have designed it.

On January, 1 1776 the Continental Congress placed General George Washington in Command of the Army. He ordered the “Grand Union Flag” above his headquarters at Prospect Hill overlooking Boston. It consisted of 13 stripes alternating Red and White with the Union Jack in the upper right side.

On June 14, 1777, “to establish an official flag for the new nation, the Continental Congress passed the first Flag Act. “Resolved, that the flag of the United States be made of thirteen stripes, alternate red and white; that the union be thirteen stars, white in a blue field, representing a new Constellation”. Next two centuries there were several new laws passed. in the beginning for every new state a new star and stripe was added. On April 4, 1818 it changed when President Monroe signed a new flag law, limiting the strips to just 13 for the original colonies and adding a new star for each new state.

The last change was on August 21, 1959 by Executive Order of President Eisenhower, following the admittance of Hawaii on the same day.

I believe that all schools from K through 12th, teach Flag history, etiquette, and the real meaning of the flag and the colors. The colors are important. “Red symbolizes Hardiness and Valor: White symbolizes Purity and Innocence: Blue represents Vigilance, Perseverance and Justice.

Respect for the Flag

No law needed just teaching in school and at home

To me disrespect for the flag the I served under hurts me. I understand that you who have shown you don’t respect our country or it’s flag, that is your right. You also have the right to leave if you hate America and all that it stands for.

What does it mean to “Respect” the flag? It is simple, stand when it goes by, with your hand or hat held in your right hand over your heart. Say to Pledge of Allegiance when it is appropriate. It is the same for the National Anthem, the “Star-Spangled Banner”.

Symbols

What are they?

These are symbols of our GREAT country and if you can’t show respect it wonder what will happen to the United States of America. If there was a war and the draft was reinstated would you leave the country? The sports and other celebrities who say if someone is elected you will move. Well the country and I are still waiting to help you pack. YOUR president is President Donald John Trump. You may not like it, and you may even hate him. However, you could show respect for our national symbols.

I am a Veteran and I am offended by your behaviors. If you wish to show that you are against something get off you butts and do something that will help the problem, kneeling for the flag and National Anthem will NOT help solve the issue you disagree with. Your money will. I agree there are things that I don’t like about what is happening in America today. I do not support everything that this country has done, but it is over now and you need to get over it. We do NOT owe you anything. If you want something GET a job and pay for including an education.
